What is semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a Glucagon-Like-Peptide-1. Peptides are short-chain amino acids found naturally in the body. This particular GLP-1 peptide hormone is produced in the small intestine. It increases the body's ability to produce insulin, inhibits glucagon, and decreases appetite, resulting in healthy and effective weight loss. It is self administered as a small subcutaneous injection which is injected into the subcutaneous fat weekly.
Many people ask if there are side effects. Overall the medication is well tolerated. Side effects of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and constipation are possible. Nausea tends to be the most common however the medication is typically dosed with Vitamin B12 which has greatly reduced or eliminated this side effect in most people. Eating smaller meals is an important element to avoiding nausea.
Contraindications: Family or personal history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, or hypersensitivity. It should be used with caution if personal history of pancreatitis.
